Residents and businesses in the eastern part of Winter Springs remain under a precautionary boil water notice after a power surge early Thursday shut down the pumps at the city's Water Treatment Plant #1.
The pumps were down for less than 25 minutes, the city said, but the outage caused a loss of water pressure across the whole eastern service area, which the plant supplies. Power is back and the plant is running again. The city said it is still working to find the cause of the surge.
Who is affected
The notice covers the entire eastern service area, stretching north from the city's southern limits to Lake Jesup. The city has posted a boil water map on its website so customers can check whether their address falls inside the zone. The alert went out Thursday morning and was still listed as active on the city's alert center early Friday.
What to do
Customers in the zone should bring tap water to a boil for one minute before drinking it or using it for cooking, according to the city, which said that step is in line with CDC and EPA guidance and kills bacteria, viruses and protozoa.
The city also warned residents not to judge the water by how it looks. Discolored water does not by itself mean a notice is needed, and clear water is not proof that it is safe while a notice is in effect. Anyone inside the mapped area should follow the notice regardless of the water's appearance.
