A Halloween-themed charity 5K that benefits UCP of Central Florida returns to Lake Mary on Saturday, Oct. 31, and for the first time this year it also offers a run-from-home option.
The Lake Scary 5K starts at Lake Mary Preparatory School, 650 Rantoul Lane. The race registration page lists the in-person event from 7:45 to 10 a.m. Participants may run, walk or roll the course, and costumes are encouraged, with prizes for the best-dressed individuals and teams. In-person finishers receive a T-shirt and a finisher medal.
Where the money goes
Proceeds go to UCP of Central Florida's Seminole campus, which according to UCP serves children with and without disabilities. The race organizers say the money helps pay for therapy services and support programs; UCP says it also supports inclusive education and family support.
Students at Lake Mary Prep organize the race, which began in 2012. UCP said the event has raised more than $115,000 for the organization since then.
"Lake Scary 5K brings together students, families, neighbors and people of all ages from across our community," said Dr. Ilene E. Wilkins, UCP's president and CEO.
