Winter Springs, Florida — Florida correctional officials prepared to carry out the lethal injection of 77-year-old death row inmate Curtis Wilkie Beasley on Tuesday evening at Florida State Prison near Starke. Beasley was condemned for the August 1995 killing of Carolyn Monfort, who was fatally struck inside her Polk County residence in the town of Dundee.
Court filings show Beasley had been performing maintenance on residential units managed by Monfort’s family when the fatal assault occurred. Following an extensive multi-state search, investigators traced him to southern Florida and subsequently to Alabama, where authorities apprehended him in the employ of an out-of-state utility contractor under an assumed identity. A jury convicted him in 1998 on charges of first-degree murder, robbery, and grand theft auto, culminating in a death sentence.
The scheduled lethal injection represents Florida's seventh execution of an individual aged 70 or older during 2026. The state has accounted for over half of all judicial executions carried out across the United States this year. A separate warrant scheduled for mid-October was recently paused by Governor Ron DeSantis to allow a psychiatric panel to evaluate inmate competency.
