Winter Springs, Florida — State health authorities have identified more than 250 locally transmitted dengue infections across Florida this year, representing the highest annual volume recorded across the continental U.S. in several decades. The surge is heavily concentrated in Hillsborough County around the Tampa metropolitan area, where municipal and county administrators declared regional emergencies to accelerate mosquito abatement and property inspections.

Local transmissions have now eclipsed travel-related infections within the state, reaching 252 domestic cases compared to 245 cases tied to outside journeys through late September. Florida historically reports the majority of continental domestic cases due to heavy transit to and from tropical territories, but previous outbreaks rarely reached current levels; the state's prior modern high stood at just under 200 domestic transmissions in 2023. One fatality linked to the viral illness has been confirmed this calendar year, involving an elderly Tampa woman who died Sept. 4.

Federal public health authorities noted that historical recordkeeping for domestic arbovirus transmission remains uneven, but data compiled by state agencies and medical literature indicates this year's tally represents the largest single-year state count since the 1940s. While federal epidemiologists from the CDC typically deploy during significant regional outbreaks, federal officials confirmed that Florida leaders have not requested direct agency deployment. However, the federal agency has provided $800,000 in assistance to the state health department, according to agency representative Jason McDonald.

The viral pathogen, which manifests with high fevers, severe muscle aching, and joint distress commonly termed breakbone fever, circulates through invasive mosquito species that thrive in warm subtropical climates. Health researchers note that climate patterns and sustained insect breeding could make localized transmission cycles more routine across the region.

"There’s a good chance that this is the new normal," said Dawn Wesson, a Tulane University expert on mosquito-borne diseases.

In Seminole County, where Winter Springs is located northeast of Orlando, public works and environmental health teams maintain ongoing surveillance of standing waterways and drainage corridors. Regional vector control specialists urge residents to eliminate pooled water in outdoor containers, maintain window screens, and wear protective clothing during dawn and dusk hours when mosquito feeding peaks.
