Seminole County Fire Department crews and American Red Cross volunteers will install free smoke alarms in a Casselberry neighborhood on Saturday, Oct. 10, the final day of Fire Prevention Week. The door-to-door event is limited to one neighborhood, but the county also runs a request program that covers qualifying homes in Winter Springs.

Saturday's event

The Sound the Alarm event covers the area around the Wilshire Drive and South Winter Park Drive intersection and is expected to reach close to 250 homes, WKMG News 6 reported. Teams plan to check existing alarms, add new ones where needed and go over home fire safety with residents.

Firefighters and volunteers began leaving door hangers about the event in the area on Monday, the station reported.

Sharon Gregory, a public safety specialist with the fire department, told the station that crews will talk with residents about lithium-ion battery fires, which she said have been increasing. "A fire these days can leave you less than two minutes to get out," Gregory said.

Saturday's work falls under the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, a national effort carried out with local fire departments.

How to request an alarm

Residents of Winter Springs, Altamonte Springs, Casselberry and unincorporated Seminole County who cannot afford a smoke alarm may ask the fire department to install one, according to the county's website. Fire department staff do the installation. Requests are taken at 407-665-5100.

The county also provides free smoke alarms and alert devices, such as bed shakers that wake a sleeper when an alarm sounds, to residents who are deaf or hard of hearing. Those requests go to SCFDPIO@seminolecountyfl.gov.

Separately, the department holds a free car seat check on the third Thursday of each month from 3 to 5 p.m. at Fire Station 27, 5280 Red Bug Lake Road in Winter Springs, according to the county.

Keeping alarms working

Gregory advised testing smoke alarms monthly. Alarms with replaceable batteries need fresh batteries each year, she said, while models with sealed lithium-ion batteries should be swapped out for a new unit every 10 years.
