Winter Springs holds a Veterans Day tribute each November. A volunteer committee wants the city to add a Memorial Day ceremony, and it takes its first formal step toward one on Thursday.

The Veteran and Veteran Family Advisory Committee meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in the City Hall commission chambers at 1126 East State Road 434. The first item on its regular agenda is a discussion of adding an annual Memorial Day event.

How it got here

At its July 9 meeting, the committee voted unanimously to ask the City Commission to consider a Memorial Day ceremony for the city, according to the draft minutes in Thursday's packet.

Committee members said at the time that, if the commission agreed, they would meet in October to work out a vision and framework for the event, possibly with the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post.

The request went to the commission on Aug. 10. According to the city's staff summary, commissioners directed staff to begin talks with the committee and report back by Jan. 1, 2027.

The commission also asked the committee to work out what the event would cost, look at coordinating with existing local groups and neighboring cities, and ask first responders for input, so the city can judge whether a ceremony is feasible in 2027 or 2028.

Veterans Day plans

City staff will also give the committee a short presentation Thursday on planning for this year's Veterans Day Tribute. The city calendar lists the tribute for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Winter Springs Veterans and Military Services Memorial on Blumberg Boulevard. City offices are closed that day for the holiday.

In July, the city's operations director told the committee that plaques recognizing past Hometown Hero honorees would be installed at the veterans monument before Veterans Day 2026, the draft minutes show.

The committee will also suggest veterans items for the city's November through January newsletters and review a tentative 2027 schedule of four meetings, in January, April, July and October.

The meeting is open to the public, with time for public input at the start and end.
