The University of Central Florida is opening its telescopes to the public Friday night for International Observe the Moon Night, a yearly worldwide event that encourages people to look up at the Moon.

When and where

  • When: Friday, Oct. 16, starting at 8 p.m. and wrapping up at 9:30 p.m.
  • Where: the Reflecting Pond on UCF's main Orlando campus
  • Cost: No charge, and all ages are welcome. Visitors from off campus may need to buy a campus parking permit.

Robinson Observatory staff will set up portable telescopes so visitors can see the Moon and other objects in the night sky. SpaceU is hosting, the university's library system and English faculty will run Moon-themed activities, with demonstrations from the university's space-related student groups.

The event depends on the weather. UCF says rain or heavy cloud could push it to another night; check the observatory's events page at planets.ucf.edu/observatory for any change.

UCF also plans a separate Space Week, Oct. 25 to 30, which the university says will include another evening of observing.
