Repeated bands of showers and storms are expected over Seminole County through at least Thursday, and the National Weather Service in Melbourne says areas hit by more than one round of heavy rain could see minor flooding.

The forecast office's Tuesday afternoon discussion placed all of east central Florida under a Marginal Risk, the lowest of four levels, for excessive rainfall on both Wednesday and Thursday. Forecasters wrote that the ground is already saturated from earlier rain and that broad totals of up to 4 inches are possible through midweek, with higher amounts in spots under the strongest downpours.

What to expect in Winter Springs

The weather service's forecast for Winter Springs calls for:

  • Tonight: showers and thunderstorms, an 80% chance of rain, a low near 72 and 1 to 2 inches of new rain possible.
  • Wednesday: showers and storms, an 80% chance, a high near 80 and another 1 to 2 inches possible, with northeast gusts up to 20 mph.
  • Wednesday night: a 70% chance, with up to about three-quarters of an inch more.
  • Thursday: showers and storms, an 80% chance and a high near 80, with gusts up to 25 mph.

The cause is a stalled front draped across the peninsula, which is keeping deep tropical moisture in place, according to the forecast discussion. Forecasters said storms could bring occasional lightning, and the strongest could produce a gust near 45 mph.

As of Tuesday evening, no flood watch or advisory was in effect for the city.

Looking ahead

Rain chances stay at 60% to 80% Friday and into the weekend. The weather service is also watching an area of low pressure in the Gulf for possible tropical development late this week, though it said the forecast is uncertain and the system may change little in the local pattern.

Low pressure forming off the Atlantic coast is expected to bring rough seas and worsening beach conditions Wednesday from Volusia County to the northern Brevard shoreline, with small craft advisories beginning tonight.
