Parents and caregivers can have a child's car seat installed or checked for free on Thursday afternoon at Seminole County Fire Station 27, 5280 Red Bug Lake Road in Winter Springs, but only with an appointment.

The Seminole County Fire Department is running the session from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, with Children's Safety Village and Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, WFTV reported Tuesday.

Nationally certified child passenger safety technicians will put in new seats and look over seats that are already installed. Each appointment is expected to run 30 to 45 minutes, so families should plan for the time.

The afternoon doubles as a training exercise. Ten trainees wrapping up a weeklong certification class for car seat technicians will practice on real installations during the appointments, according to the report.

Book ahead

Fire officials cautioned that residents should not assume they can pull into any fire station and get a car seat checked without calling first, because trained technicians are not always on duty.

To book a slot for Thursday, call or text 407-607-4202 or email SCFDPIO@seminolecountyfl.gov.

A monthly service

The county holds car seat inspections on the third Thursday of each month, WESH reported in July, when the department noted that one of its public safety specialists had become the county's only nationally certified child passenger safety technician instructor. Thursday's session falls on the third Thursday of October.

More information on free car seat inspections and the department's other community outreach programs is on the Seminole County Fire Department page of the county website.
