Workers at a Seminole County solid waste facility found five young kittens loose on the tipping floor, where garbage trucks unload, and four of them are now with foster families, county officials told WKMG News 6.
A county employee doing a morning check of a loader saw a small gold kitten dart past, then found three more nearby and a fifth farther back, the station reported. Several co-workers offered to foster or adopt the animals, but Seminole County Animal Services first took them in for medical care.
Diane Gagliano, who coordinates the Animal Services foster program, told the station the kittens were about four weeks old and weighed roughly a pound each when they arrived. They appeared to be from one litter, and no mother cat was found. The weakest of the five died; the other four recovered. Staff are handling vaccinations and spay or neuter surgery before adoption.
County officials said they have not determined whether the kittens were dumped or reached the facility some other way, such as in a collection truck. Abandoning an animal in Florida can bring misdemeanor or felony charges.
