A pump the city of Winter Springs set up in the Highland Village neighborhood will stay in place until a privately owned pond drops back to normal levels, after the pond overflowed this week and sent water across MacGregor Road.
Water had pulled back considerably by Friday afternoon, Spectrum News 13 reported, and neighbors said little rain fell that day. One resident who lives two houses from the pond told the station that on Thursday the water would not drain and came close to his front door, and that neighbors are uneasy about what a hurricane could do.
Why the city stepped in
City communications director Matt Reeser told Spectrum News 13 that some parts of Winter Springs have a history of flooding during long rain events like this week's. Although the pond is private, the city acted because water reached the road, he said, adding that even a few inches of standing water can cause problems for drivers.
The city said it is talking with the neighborhood about options for maintaining the pond, and crews will keep watching the area. Reeser urged residents to call the city when they notice drainage problems so crews can respond before they grow.
